CAT-CAP Computer Aided Technology for Coding of Activities and Products (TM)
Is a Demo Software for computer aided coding of Classifications which links together three international nomenclatures, NACE Rev. 1, CPA (Classification of Products by Activity) and CN (Combined Nomenclature ‘96).
The Demo Version of CAT-CAP provided on this site for a free download, can be used with two different languages: English and Italian, being possible to change the language dynamically during the coding process. The "Custom licensed" version may be supplied for managing whatever International Classification, including the old/obsolete ones, allowing the coder to move from a classification to another also using more than two languages. The "Custom licensed" software may also include a national classification, developed according a Country/Custom special needs, and may link any domestic nomenclature with NACE and other International or ONU classifications. The Demo Version of CAT-CAP can be used also to measure the performance of a coder, as it takes a track record of the elapsed time and of the average coding time for a single operator during a coding session.
This Software it is not a commercial product and can not be used to perform a real coding job in that the CN (Combined Nomenclature) and CPA Nomenclatures contained in it are those of 1996 and therefore the codes that they produce must be considered obsolete.
The commercial versions of the technology naturally use the up to date Nomenclatures.

Why Technology and not Product?
We speak of "technology" rather than "product" in that this Software allows the user to "Build" software products or applications and allows the users to become self supporting in the preparation of their own computer assisted coding systems. It also allows users to update the Nomenclature as required without needing to depend on the technology supplier.
If it were a "Product" it would be closely tied to the Nomenclature used and therefore would become rapidly obsolete as a result of any changes to the Nomenclature itself and would also always be closely dependent on the "manufacturer".
CVBase does not represent itself as a supplier of products but rather as a "technology partner" to help the Clients to set up their own computer assisted coding system, incorporating the CAT-CAP technology within the software already developed by the client. The objective of each CVBase project is that of making a client "self supporting" in the use of the technology.

CAT-CAP Database
RAM-DB (Random Access Memory Data Base) is a proprietary technology, RAM resident type, which offers two main values:
a) Has been optimized to be mostly resident in the core memory (RAM) of the computer, and therefore it is very performing in terms of speed
b) Allows to create low-cost applications because it does not need very expensive run-time licenses.
c) Can be easily used on note-book, laptop and/or desktop computers
d) Allows to create applications which can be exploited via Internet

Nomenclatures
CAT-CAP technology can be used for any type of coding found in any given Country, even for special national specific Nomenclatures (national versions of NACE) and therefore there are no limitations in the number and type of Nomenclatures that can be linked among each other. For example it would be possible to use PRODCOM, ISIC Rev. 3 and/or CPC.
In this demo version three Nomenclatures, the NACE Rev. 1, the CPA '96 and the CN.'96, are linked among each other.
At the highest level of detail the Nomenclatures included in this Demo Version have the following sizes:
the NACE contains 503 classes
the CPA contains 2.304 sub-categories
the CN contains 10.495 products
CAT-CAP technology has also been applied to other Nomenclatures, such as the Nomenclature of Occupational Titles, and many others.

Thesaurus
CAT-CAP technology is using Thesaurus, specifically created for each language and for each Nomenclature and therefore both the number of references and the content can be very different, in that some words and idioms which are present in one language may have no correspondence in another language.
The number of items in CPA Thesaurus is as follows:
- Italian language:alphabetic items 2.163inked sub-categories 18.433
- English language:alphabetic items 7.058inked sub-categories 77.724

Coding Functionality
With this demo software it is possible to obtain the following results:
a) Obtain the descriptions
Typing a known code, it is possible to obtain the corresponding description in any of the two Nomenclatures: CPA and CN. The code and the NACE description will always be automatically obtained from the software for each of the two Nomenclature.
b) Obtain the CPA and NACE codes
Searching for a word describing an economic activity or a product will bring up the corresponding CPA and NACE description.
If the check-box corresponding to CPA-CN link has been selected, the program will also ask to carry out a choice of a CN item among all those associated with CPA code that has been chosen, thus linking all three Nomenclatures, after having received the CPA code.
c) Obtain the CN, CPA and NACE codes
By searching for the name of a product in the dialogue box corresponding to the CN Nomenclature it is possible to obtain the corresponding code. As an additional result, the CPA and NACE descriptions associated with the CN code found by the user will always be obtained, automatically.

Multilingual Functionality
CAT-CAP technology is also multilingual and there are no limitations on the type and number of the languages that can be used simultaneously in a program. In this Demo Version the English and Italian languages have been included.
CAT-CAP multilingual technology is quite useful in those cases in which the users must serve clients that use a different language from their own, and can benefit from this tool that allows the user maximum flexibility in dynamic language switching during the coding operation (see also Advanced Multilingual Features). This can be the case of the foreign Consular Trade Offices, which must code the activity of the Companies in foreign countries, that wish to trade with their Country. Even the coding of the lists of foreign companies can benefit from the multilingual technology of the DLD (Digital Language Dictionary) (TM) of CVBase.
The multilingual functionality can also be useful in carrying out translations of the activities and of the product descriptions in multiple languages. In fact since the memory of the coding session is not reset when the language is changed, it is possible to print out the coding session in multiple languages.
Try to perform two subsequent printouts of the coding session, after having changed the language.

Coding Performance Report
This demo version has been equipped with a system of memorization of the main parameters of the coding job, so as to enable any user requiring it, to do comparative performance tests between the manual coding system and the computer assisted system. The handling of these parameters can be customized according to the requirements of any specific Client.
The data that is memorized is the following:
User name.
Date and time of the start of the coding session.
Date and time of the end of the coding session.
Average duration of the coding operations defined as average of the time lapse between pressing the Search button and pressing the OK button.
Average delay between a coding operation and another defined as average of time lapse between pressing the OK button and pressing the Search button.
Number of codes found in the coding session.
Real coding speed expressed in "number of codes per hour".
Theoretical coding speed expressed in "number of codes per hour" assuming that the average delay is equal to one second.
The above data can be printed with the Print Performance command of the Print menu.
The performance related data is kept for all the coding sessions, to enable tests representing different environmental conditions. This data is deleted upon quitting the program.

CAT-CAP On line help
This demo software has been equipped with "Object Help", "Quick Help" and "On line Help" systems.
To explore Object Help system, click on any object with the right mouse button. To explore Quick Help system pause for a moment with the mouse arrow on an object. To explore On line Help system click on the Help menu of CAT-CAP's menu bar or press F1 key.
Since it is Demo software the help system is complete but concise.
